AUDIOCONFERENCE OVERVIEW

Episode payment is becoming an increasingly popular concept for health care reimbursement, because it promotes care coordination and increases incentives for providers to help patients achieve good outcomes. Implicit in most episode payment systems is the concept of a warranty: providers take on the risk of preventable complications. Using the Prometheus Payment system as a model, this webinar - based on the paper "Should Health Care Come with a Warranty?" published in Health Affairs in June 2009 - will explore both the theory and practical implications of warranties in health care. Specific topics to be addressed in the webinar include:

  • Application of the warranty concept to health care systems
  • Current examples of health care warranties
  • Discussion of different forms of health care risk
  • The Prometheus method of building evidence-informed episode payment rates
  • Use of models to predict impact of episode payment and warranties on quality of care
